1982 240D or 2009 GTI. Answer inside.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
It's the God damn VW again. I'm hoping it's just the battery this time. Battery light comes on followed quickly by rough running with a CEL and stalling. Battery reads 12.2v which is definitely on the low side. When cranking it dropped to 10.6, but alternator seems okay because once running I'm getting 14.5v. Tomorrow I'll get it tested and see what codes I can get off it.

I literally just posted this to someone else 3 min ago.
odds are: battery, coils.

Make sure ignition coils are properly seated. Rough idle wouldn't be battery related.. You'll probably have cylinder misfire codes.

hm.. I had a bad alternator pulley last year, didn't affect it due to it being a diesel. I had an occasional battery light come up while setting off, so the belt slipped a bit when that happened.
if it isn't the battery, check the coils, and maybe even the alternator.

Quelle suprise!

Some Bosh Alternators have adjustable regulators available for them.

I just felt like breaking it I suppose.

The rough running had me thinking it was something else. I had called the dealer and they said it was possible due to a failing battery. Guess we find out tomorrow. unenthusiastic "yay"

Thanks. I'll see what codes I get. If it's anything not related to the battery it's going to the dealer. Since this engine only has about 5k miles on it.

Guessing coils as well. My 2010s have gone out twice. Never had a battery light, but did have a flashing CEL (then steady a few weeks later) along with rough running and limp mode. R8 coils are plug and play and have a slightly different internal design. They were only about 5 bucks more per coil than the regular VW ones and it's been about 20k since I put them in. It's pathetic, but that's the longest I've had them last.........

I had to have the engine replaced about 5k miles ago. I wonder if the coils and alternator are part of a long block replacement or if the originals are used?
*edit* upon further research originals were probably reused.

Actually dead batteries and weak alternators can cause rough run conditions. It has to do with inconsistent and insufficient power and reference voltage signals to all of the sensors and control modules, etc. It doesn't happen very often but is getting to be more and more common as cars get more and more complicated.

Dropping to 10.6v under load is pretty good, and so is 12.2v static. The alternator could be charging at 14.5v but only 10 amps instead of 50+ amps. Battery system voltage must always be one of the first things addressed with problems like this because improper voltage can cause so many weird issues that you wouldn't have the slightest idea about where to begin and you might be wrong even if you guessed because low voltage was the root concern the whole time.
